Which Is the Best Courier for Sign Makers?

Choosing a courier as a sign maker is not quite as simple as finding the cheapest next-day parcel service.

One day you might be sending a box of sign fixings. The next, it could be aluminium profiles, sign posts, fabricated components or an oversized item that will not travel through a conventional parcel network.

So, which courier is best for sign makers? The answer depends largely on what you are sending.

For smaller parcels, services such as DPD can offer convenient next-day delivery and detailed tracking. For awkward and oversized lengths, specialist freight networks such as DX become more relevant. Where speed, heavier consignments and broader delivery options are important, DHL offers an extensive range of express services.

How do the UK's major couriers compare?

Ofcom's 2025 research provides one of the most useful independent comparisons of UK parcel companies. It asked customers about their overall satisfaction with deliveries from individual operators. Importantly, these figures measure customer satisfaction, not the percentage of parcels successfully delivered.

These figures should not be read as a simple best-to-worst courier ranking for sign makers. A parcel network designed around small consumer deliveries and a freight network handling awkward long items are doing very different jobs. That distinction matters when choosing a courier for signage.

DPD - a strong option for smaller signs and plaques.

For boxes containing smaller signs, labels, stickers, plaques etc, DPD is a useful option to consider.

DPD Online currently accepts parcels up to 30kg and advertises next-working-day collection services with real-time tracking. Its online collection prices currently start at £5.81, with example published prices ranging from £6.56 for 5kg to £12.81 for 30kg. Actual prices depend on dimensions, weight and service selected.

DPD also provides recipients with tracking and delivery notifications, including a one-hour delivery window. In Ofcom's 2025 research, 79% of surveyed DPD users said they were satisfied with their overall delivery experience, slightly above the 78% average across the operators measured.

Consider DPD for:

  • Small signage and plaques
  • Stickers and Cut vinyl
  • Sign lettering
  • Sign fixings and accessories
  • Small fabricated components
  • Smaller boxed products
  • Standard next-day and timed consignments
  • Long sign posts
  • Aluminium and ACM sign trays
  • Large or oversized sign blanks with channel
  • Any items over 1000mm long (up to 6000mm in length)
  • Long fabricated components
  • Awkwardly shaped products
  • Freight unsuitable for automated parcel sorting
  • Only suitable for Business to Business deliveries (Residential addresses face substantial surcharges)
  • Slightly larger and longer packages
  • Multi-piece consignments (more than one box)
  • Domestic & Residential express delivery
  • Maximum parcel dimensions
  • Maximum weight
  • Whether long or irregular freight is accepted
  • Tracking
  • Delivery speed
  • Proof of delivery
  • Insurance or liability cover
  • Surcharges
  • Failed-delivery procedures
  • Damage and claims processes
  • Business account pricing

  • DPD UK - current UK service and parcel information
  • DHL Express UK - current domestic service specifications
  • Parcelforce Worldwide - express48large service specifications
  • DX Group - published information on irregular-dimension freight services

For any items over 1000mm or unusually shaped sign-making products, however, a conventional parcel service may not always be the most appropriate network.

DX - worth considering for long and awkward signage products

Sign makers that cover nationwide installs may have to send signage and over sized supplied that do not look anything like a conventional cardboard parcel: Sign trays, blanks with channel, sign posts and other awkward freight to site or installation teams. This is where a specialist freight service can become particularly useful.

DX Freight specialises in irregular-dimension and weight freight. Published DX material describes its freight operation as handling awkward, non-standard weights, lengths and sizes, while historical DX service documentation identifies capability for irregular items up to six metres long.

That makes this type of network particularly relevant to the sign trade, where oversized lengths can fall outside standard parcel dimensions.

                Consider DX for:

Check the current limits and charges for your individual DX account and service before dispatch, particularly for unusually long freight.

DHL - useful when speed and shipment capability matter

DHL is another strong option when the priority is a combination of speed, tracking and the ability to handle heavier or slightly longer consignments.

DHL Express Domestic offers next-possible-working-day delivery, with time-specific options including Express 09:00 and Express 12:00. Its published UK specifications allow individual pieces up to 30kg. Standard maximum piece dimensions are 18000mm which allows for a good variety of signage and materials.

DHL also offers specialist services for shipments that fall outside standard specifications. Ofcom recorded 79% overall delivery satisfaction for DHL in 2025, up two percentage points from its 2024 result.

                                Consider DHL for:

For very long products such as sign posts and extrusions, always check whether the shipment fits the selected DHL service rather than assuming it can travel through the standard parcel network.

Parcelforce - another option for longer parcels

Parcelforce is also worth considering when a shipment is too long for many conventional parcel services but does not necessarily require specialist freight.

Its express48 large service accepts individual parcels up to 2.5 metres long and 30kg, with a maximum combined length and girth of four metres. The service advertises delivery within two working days to the majority of UK destinations and currently lists consumer pricing from £51.65.

Ofcom's 2025 survey recorded 81% satisfaction with Parcelforce deliveries, above the 78% operator average. This can make it worth checking for medium-length sign-making products that sit between a standard parcel and specialist freight.

What about Royal Mail, UPS, FedEx, Evri and Yodel?

These networks all have their place within the wider UK delivery market, but the most appropriate service still depends on the shipment. Ofcom found significant variation in customer experience during 2025. Royal Mail recorded 84% overall delivery satisfaction, UPS 73%, FedEx 72%, Evri 73% and Yodel 69%.

Customer satisfaction is not the only consideration for a sign business. An operator could perform well for millions of conventional parcels but still be unsuitable for a 3-metre aluminium profile. Conversely, a freight carrier dealing with awkward industrial consignments might record lower consumer satisfaction while offering capabilities that standard parcel networks do not provide.

                                      Price isn't the whole story

The cheapest quote is not necessarily the cheapest delivery. For a sign maker, a damaged panel, bent extrusion, lost component or failed delivery can cost significantly more than the difference between two courier quotes.

                                      When comparing services, consider:

Business courier rates can differ substantially from public prices because they are commonly negotiated according to shipment volume and profile. For that reason, published consumer prices are not a reliable way of declaring one courier the UK's cheapest option for sign makers.

What do other UK businesses use?

Ofcom's 2024/25 SME research gives an indication of the parcel providers being used by UK organisations. Among businesses surveyed about their main provider for packets and parcels, Royal Mail remained the most commonly used at 55%. Among alternative providers, Evri accounted for 11%, Parcelforce 9%, DPD/DPD Local 6%, DHL 6%, Yodel 3%, FedEx 2% and UPS 2%.

Use of providers other than Royal Mail had increased from 30% in 2022/23 to 45% in 2024/25, suggesting businesses are increasingly spreading deliveries across alternative networks. For sign makers, that multi-carrier approach makes sense.

So, which courier should a sign maker use?

Rather than choosing one courier for everything, it can be more practical to match the courier to the shipment.

For smaller boxed products: DPD provides next-working-day options, recipient tracking and a 79% satisfaction result in Ofcom's 2025 research.

For long and awkward items: DX's specialist irregular-dimension freight network makes it particularly relevant for products such as long profiles, posts and other items that do not fit conventional parcel systems.

For a wider size restriction and residential capability: DHL offers next-working-day domestic services, pieces up to 70kg on Express Domestic and options for pallets and larger consignments.

For parcels up to 2.5 metres: Parcelforce express48large provides another option worth comparing before moving into specialist freight. But the cost could be prohibitive.

Ultimately, there is not one best courier for every sign-making business. The better question is: Which courier is best for this particular shipment?

Measure the package, check the weight, consider how easily the contents could be damaged and then compare the services capable of handling it safely. For a sign maker sending everything from a packet of fixings to several-metre lengths of material, having more than one courier option available can be far more useful than trying to make every order fit through the same network.
