Which size channel do I need?

Aluminium Sign channel is used to secure sign blanks to posts and vertical sign supports. There are quite a few options to choose from and each has their own uses. This article highlights the key things to keep in mind when selecting which sign channel is best for

Different names for sign channel

Aluminium sign channel can be known as many different names within the UK sign industry. However it is important to note that no matter the name each supplier uses, every sign channel accepts the same anti-rotational sign clips and square head bolts. Names for sign channel we have come across:

  • Sign rail
  • Clip extrusion
  • Signfix channel
  • Sign stiffener
  • Sign track
  • Sign mounting rail
  • Back channel

Types of sign channel

No matter what you want to call it, aluminium sign channel is often supplied in 4 common variations:

Small Sign Channel

small sign channel

Small sign channel is the most simple extrusion of the range, consisting of a U shaped profile that accepts a 13mm square head bolt. The small sign channel profile is designed for smaller post mounted signs that are less than 1m/sq. Commonly used for health and safety signs, CCTV and warning signage, speed limit signs and general marking.

Dimensions of small channel - 22 x 16mm

ProTip: Some small channel is extruded without the two flanges at the top, this can make it tricky to hold the sign against the post when installing with post clips

Medium Sign Channel

medium sign channel

The medium sign channel works in the exact same way as the small, however it is slightly larger in size and designed for use with signage above 1m/sq. The taller profile adds extra structural rigidity to the sign to counteract the larger effects of wind-loading. Medium sign channel is our most popular of the 4 variants as it allows sign makers to stock a single extrusion that is suitable for both smaller and larger signage.

Dimensions of medium channel - 25 x 25.5mm

ProTip: Purchasing medium sign channel with structural bonding tape pre-applied can speed up post and panel sign fabrication in the workshop

Medium Interlocking Sign Channel

medium interlocking sign channel

An interlocking version of the medium sign channel is also available, this profile allows signs to be made larger than the standard sheet sizes. An interlocking channel is bonded at the very edge of each of the adjoining sign blanks, then when they meet the male and female parts of the profile interlock. A butting plate is then used to secure the blanks together and prevent them blanks separating over time.

Dimensions of Interlocking Channel - 35 x 25.5mm

ProTip: Interlocking channel can also be used for long fascia panels or trays that are created with more than one panel. The channel can be bonded vertically to the connecting edges to stop the panels bowing inwards or outwards.

Large Sign Channel

Large sign channel is not as commonly used in day to day sign making, designed for the largest of sign blanks and often only needed when specified by structural engineers drawings. More commonly used by highway sign manufacturers.

Dimensions of Large Sign Channel - 27 x 33mm

Sign channel finishes

Like most aluminium extrusions, there are various finishing options available. Sign channel is no different and is readily available in mill finish or powder coated options.

Mill Finish Sign Channel

Mill finish extrusion is generally the cheapest option as it has not gone through the secondary process of cleaning and powder coating. Often used when flush riveting the sign channel to mill finish aluminium sheet is planned, once riveted the blank will be ready to go through the powder coating process to create a custom colour sign system.

ProTip: If you intend to use structural bonding tape with mill finish channel it is imperative that the profile is thoroughly degreased with a strong solvent cleaner such as Stykra EXT cleaner before tape application. It can take a bit of elbow grease to really get the extrusions residues off before bonding can take place

Powder Coat Sign Channel

Powder coated profile is the most popular choice for sign makers. Sign Trade Supplies stocks large quantities of grey, black and white powder coat channel to match ACM sheeting colours and also our standard aluminium sign post extrusions

Powder coat colours for sign channel:

Grey - RAL 7005

Black - RAL 9017

White - RAL 9016

All of the powder coated sign channel from Sign Trade Supplies is finished with a unique matt finish to enhance the bond when post and panel blanks are created using structural bonding tape.

Which size do I need?

So now you know what sign channel variations are available, deciding on which sign channel can be done in two ways; Industry Standards or Signload calculation software.

Industry Standard Practices:

Small Sign Channel - Suitable for signs less than 1m/sq

Medium Sign Channel - Suitable for signs larger than 1m/sq

Medium Interlocking Sign Channel - Suitable for signs panels that exceed the size of standard sheeting.

Large sign channel - For use on large sign panels that have certain specifications needing the extra strength of the larger extrusion.

SignLoad Software:

SignLoad is an industry leading software from Buchanan Computing that takes the guess work out of safe sign structures. This tool is mainly aimed at the highway sign design sector, however the exact same principles can be applied to all post mounted signage.

When entering your sign blank size, mounting height and location, SignLoad suggests the most suitable sign channel profile and also the appropriate sign posts. This is great for peace of mind and also providing structural safety reports to your end client to prove your sign system is designed to road sign safety specifications.

Conclusion

Choosing the correct aluminium sign channel is crucial for ensuring your signage is both safe and durable. From small health and safety signs to large highway panels, the right channel size and finish can make all the difference in structural integrity and ease of installation. By following industry standards or using tools like SignLoad software, you can confidently select the best channel for your project. With the wide range of options available, both in size and finish, you’re sure to find a solution that meets your specific needs.
