How to mount double sided signs on a single sign post

Double sided signs are common practice for walkways and roads that have two way traffic and pedestrians. This article runs through the different options of achieving this installation.

There are multiple ways to create double sided sign installations (aka back to back signs). A common feature in each solution is the need for two sign blanks that have aluminium sign channels bonded or riveted to the rear. Depending on the fixing method chosen below, The sign blanks will need the channel in standard layout OR offset layout

Back to Back Sign Clips - Standard Layout

By using the standard layout of channel on the rear of the sign blanks (the channel is positioned in the exact same location on each blank) You will be able to use standard sign clips and back to back clips to install the signs.

Back to Back fixing method

  1. Use standard anti-rotational sign clips to hold the first blank on the sign.
  2. Slide one back to back sign clip into each side of the channel on the first blank.
  3. Slide two square head bolts into the channel on the second sign blank
  4. Line up the bolts in the second panel with the back to back clips in the first blank.
  5. Tighten the nuts to hold the second sign blank to the post.

See the video below demonstrating the process (without sign blanks obstructing view)

Standard Sign Clips - Offset Layout

If you decide to offset your sign channels i.e the sign channels will not meet when signs are placed back to back. This will allow the installer to use standard sign clips for both signs. The installation method is similar to the process above. However it is much more fiddly when attempting to hook the second sign blank's clips around the post and then tightening them up.

Standard clip installation method

  1. Use standard anti-rotational sign clips to hold the first blank on the sign.
  2. Next offer the second blank up to the post and use the next set of anti-rotational sign clips to secure it to the post.

Pro tip: The smaller the sign post, the harder it is to gain access to fix the second clip, it can be very tricky. Also, the wider the sign the harder it is to reach the middle of the post. With back to back clip method, it is much easier and quicker.
