How to install a sign onto security, mesh or palisade fencing

Fixing sings to posts is easy, but often signage will need to be fixed to palisade fencing, security mesh and railings. In this case, the humble sign post clip won't work. This article will run through the various fixing options available.

Fixing sign blanks to non-conventional supports or fences can sometimes pose a problem to sign installers. Without a simple sign post clip or banding solution installers can sometimes resort to screwing through the face of a sign or using drilled holes and cable ties. This doesn't need to be the solution for these scenarios, lets break down two alternative solutions available:

Flat Bar & Channel

The most common solution for installing signs to irregular railings, security or palisade fencing is using lengths of aluminium flat bar and square head bolts. The sign blank must have aluminium sign channel bonded to the rear for this solution to work.

Things you will need

  • 2 man installation team
  • 1 piece of flat bar per sign channel on sign blank (flat bar should be the same length as channel)
  • Power drill
  • 10mm diameter metal drill bit
  • Square head bolts that are long enough to pass through the fence
  • M8 nuts and washers

Installation Method

  1. Take the sign and offer it up to the fence. Mark on the sign channel where the openings of the fence will allow a bolt through.
  2. Drill 10mm diameter holes in the flat bar to line up with marks.
  3. Slide the square head bolts into the channel and line them up with the marks. Use M8 washers and M8 nuts to secure bolts in place.
  4. Position the sign on the fence with the bolts passing through the openings.
  5. With an installer on either side of the fence, place the flat bar over the bolts and use another set of M8 washers and nuts to clamp the sign to the fence.

Pro Tip: For signs installed at low level or high traffic areas it is good practice to cut off any protruding sign bolt and cover using hex nut protection caps.

For signs blanks that do not have aluminium sign channel bonded to the rear, there is a second option to fix the blanks to security mesh, chain link or tennis court fencing. The Chain Link Fence Clip is a quick an effective way to securely fix the sign to fencing.

Manufactured from glass reinforced nylon the chain link fence clip is incredibly strong and has an M8 threaded hole through the middle. The fixing is supplied with a 25mm x M8 hex head bolt.

  • 2 man installation team
  • Power drill
  • 10mm diameter metal drill bit

Installation Method
